How to Set Up Arduino IDE & Write Your Own Firmware
- Install Arduino IDE:
Download and install the latest Arduino IDE from arduino.cc/en/software. - Install CH340 USB Driver (if needed):
Some ESP32 boards use the CH340 USB-to-Serial chip. If your device is not detected, download and install the driver from wch.cn/downloads/CH341SER_EXE.html. - Add ESP32 Board Support:
Open Arduino IDE, go to File > Preferences and add this URL to "Additional Boards Manager URLs":
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/gh-pages/package_esp32_index.json
Then go to Tools > Board > Boards Manager, search for "ESP32" and install it. - Select the Board:
Go to Tools > Board and select ESP32-WROOM-DA. - Connect Your SmartBox v2:
Plug in your device via USB. Select the correct port under Tools > Port. - Install Required Libraries:
For OLED display:Adafruit SSD1306andAdafruit GFX(install via Tools > Manage Libraries). - Open or Write Your Sketch:
Start with an example or write your own code. Use the pinout info above for hardware connections. - Upload the Firmware:
Click the Upload button. Wait for the process to finish. Your SmartBox v2 will reboot with your new firmware.
Need inspiration? Check out example firmwares on GitHub or use the pinout above to create your own project!
How to Write Code with ChatGPT or Grok
AI tools like ChatGPT and Grok can help you quickly generate, explain, and debug Arduino code for your SmartBox v2. Just describe your project and paste the pinout—AI will do the rest!
- Open ChatGPT or Grok:
Go to ChatGPT or Grok and start a new chat. - Paste the Pinout and Describe Your Project:
Paste the following as your prompt:I have an ESP32-WROOM-DA device. Please generate Arduino (.ino) code for this pinout: // Display configuration #define SCREEN_WIDTH 128 #define SCREEN_HEIGHT 64 #define OLED_RESET -1 #define SCREEN_ADDRESS 0x3C // Pin definitions #define BUZZER_PIN 26 // Buzzer connected to pin 26 #define RELAY_PIN 33 // Relay connected to pin 33 #define BUTTON1_PIN 12 // Red button #define BUTTON2_PIN 13 // Green button #define BOOT_BUTTON 0 // Select button I want the code to toggle the relay when BUTTON1 is pressed and show the relay status on the OLED display. - Copy the Generated Code:
When the AI generates code, copy it. - Paste into Arduino IDE:
Open Arduino IDE, paste the code, and upload it to your SmartBox v2.
Tips:
- Be specific about what you want the code to do (e.g., "Display temperature on OLED and buzz when above 30°C").
- Ask the AI to add comments or explain the code if you're unsure.
- If you get errors, paste them into the chat and ask for help fixing them.
- Always review and test the code for safety before uploading to your device.
